Head Start Environmental Exposure Mapping Tool

section of an United States map displaying environmental hazards areas. The Head Start Environmental Exposure Mapping Tool uses Head Start administrative data to show the relative exposure of Head Start service locations and children to environmental and climate hazards in different parts of the country.

The companion Resource Dashboard includes information, resources, and tools for Head Start providers and other early childhood stakeholders to address environmental and climate change-related challenges and support evidence-based action. Resources in the dashboard include:

  • Case studies featuring Head Start and partner provider success stories about how they addressed environmental and climate hazards in their communities
  • Fact sheets detailing information about risks from the environmental and climate hazards featured in the Mapping Tool
  • Educational, training, planning, and advocacy materials to support providers in taking action to reduce children’s exposure to and address negative impacts from environmental and climate hazards

The tool and resource dashboard are federally sponsored. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation and the Office of Head Start provided support to the Urban Institute in developing this tool as a resource for Head Start and other providers focused on child health and well-being. These resources can support Head Start and other child health, early education, and social services providers in reducing the exposures children face.
